January 3rd 2004 Meeting Highlights

The Guest Speaker, Lt. Colonel Leo LeBell was a nurse anesthetist in the surgery wards in Vietnam. The Colonel spoke for about 30 minutes on the history of men in nursing careers.

A donation to the Spooner House for $100.00 was approved. The Spooner House is a homeless shelter serving the Nagatuck Valley.

A donation for $200.00 dollars was approved for Darien Chapter #1932 of the MOPH in order to help in them purchase and dedicate a Purple Heart Monument in their area.

Commander Doherty discussed the program to invite all veterans groups from the Naugatuck Valley area to a proposed visit by the Commissioner of the Department of Veterans Affairs at Rocky Hill. The date for her visit ( at the Derby Vererans Building ) is Saturday, March 27th, 2004 at 10:00 AM. The Commissioner, Linda Schwartz , is expected to discuss happenings at the Home and Hospital at Rocky Hill. She has begun the process of building a new Hospital with all the bells and whistles for our veterans who live there. Commander Doherty has plans to continue the recognition program which proved so successful with our nurses last September. This time we plan to honor those Medics and Corpsmen who followed us into battle to stop our bleeding and ease our pain. The Commander needs some volunteers to help with the program. Also we need to find the honorees . If you know someone who fits the bill as a Medic or Corpsman in the Military please let us know. Commander Doherty discussed the need to replenish funds with a viola drive (how we raise funds to assist veterans in need ) ASAP. There was some discussion about trying for an indoor spot perhaps at Dunkin Donuts. Commander will attempt to find a spot. Volunteers are needed!
